The Fine Print: Does Whitening Work on Every Stain?

Whitening gets marketed like a universal reset button. It isn't. Where your stain sits, and what caused it, decides how much movement is realistic, and no toothpaste or strip is going to tell you that. Here's the honest breakdown, by stain type.

Why We Assess Before We Whiten

The most common reason a whitening treatment "doesn't work" isn't the treatment, it's that the stain was never a candidate for whitening to begin with. Our laser-assisted system is excellent at what whitening actually does well: lifting surface and age-related discoloration quickly and evenly.

Four Kinds of Stain, Four Different Outcomes

  • Coffee, tea, wine, tobacco (whitens well): Surface stains that sit on top of the enamel, layer by layer. This is exactly what whitening is built for, the gel lifts the buildup cleanly, and the result shows fast.
  • Age-related yellowing (gradual response): Enamel thins naturally over the years, letting the yellower dentin underneath show through more. Whitening still helps here, it just takes a longer, more gradual course.
  • Tetracycline or fluorosis banding (limited response): These stains were laid down inside the tooth while it was still forming, not on the surface. Whitening can soften them, but the underlying banding usually stays visible.
  • A single dark tooth after trauma (needs a different fix): Caused by internal bleeding or tissue breakdown inside the tooth, often after an injury or a root canal, not staining at all. Surface gel physically can't reach the source.

What We'll Tell You Upfront

Every treatment here starts with a shade reading and a short conversation about where your staining likely came from, so you're not paying for a result that was never on the table. If your case calls for something else, internal bleaching on a single dark tooth, or bonding and veneers for deep intrinsic banding, we'll tell you that upfront and walk you through what actually applies to you.

Not sure what's causing yours? Come in for a shade assessment and we'll tell you exactly what kind of stain you have, and what will actually move it.
