Cold Feet: What That Zing After Whitening Actually Means

The single biggest reason people put off whitening isn't the price or the time, it's the fear of that sharp zing on the first sip of cold water. It's real, it's common, and it's also almost entirely manageable when the treatment is done properly.

Why Sensitivity Happens

  • The zing itself: Whitening gel temporarily opens the microscopic pores in enamel to reach discoloration. That's what lets cold and air reach the nerve for a day or two. It's expected, and it settles on its own.
  • Existing enamel wear or gum recession: If enamel is already thin or roots are slightly exposed, the nerve has less protection to begin with. We check for this before treatment, not after you've felt it.
  • DIY overuse: Layering strips, leaving trays in too long, or repeating treatments back-to-back without a break floods the enamel far past what it needs, and sensitivity climbs fast.
  • Uncontrolled exposure time: Older whitening lamps run hot and hold gel on the tooth far longer than needed. More heat and more time on the tooth is exactly what drives sensitivity up.

What a Comfort-First Session Actually Looks Like

Our laser system is calibrated for shorter, cooler exposure than older lamps, and every session includes a desensitising step before you leave the chair.

Sensitivity isn't something we wait for and react to, it's screened for before we start. A quick check of your enamel and gumline tells us how your teeth are likely to respond, and the treatment plan is adjusted before the first drop of gel goes on.

How We Manage It

  • Pre-treatment screening: We check enamel and gum condition before we begin.
  • Controlled exposure: Shorter, cooler sessions than older lamp-based systems.
  • Desensitising gel included: Applied at the end of every session, no extra ask.
  • Clear aftercare: You'll know exactly what to expect for the next 24 to 48 hours.
